  • Description

France and Brazil have agreed to try to even out their trade exchanges. At present, there is a trade imbalance in Brazil's favour, amounting to 137 million dollars in 1977, which France is eager to reduce. The two nations' joint trade has been main topic during talks in Brasilia between French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing and Brazilian President Ernesto Geisel. The move towards a more balanced development of exchanges was announced in a joint communique issued in the Brazilian capital on Friday (October 6).

SYNOPSIS: President Giscard arrived in Brasilia in a Concorde on Wednesday (October 4) to start a four-day official visit to Brazil. It was the first time that Concorde, which flies a regular service between Paris and Rio de Janeiro, had landed at the capital. It arrived at a military base, but hundreds of people crowded the nearby civilian airport to see the aircraft.

President Giscard and his wife paused to congratulate the pilot as they left the plane, before going on to be warmly welcomed by President Geisel and his wife.

The two Heads of State left for private talks on a wide range of international subjects - including human rights, the Middle East, disarmament, and Sino-Soviet relations. Close co-operation between France and Brazil followed President Geisel's state visit to Paris in 1976. France now exports technology and equipment to its growing third world partner, and plays an important role in its development.
