  • Description

Saudi Arabia's King Khalid and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat travelled by train to Alexandria on Thursday (17 July) and received a huge welcome from thousands of people in the Mediterranean city.

The two leaders resumed their talks on the deadlocked Middle East situation on Friday (18 July). On the top of the agenda was Egypt's decision not to extend the mandate of the United Nations peace-keeping force in Sinai. The mandate expires on July 24. No statement was made after the session.

King Khalid was in Egypt for a five-day visit, his first trip abroad since he succeeded his brother Faisal in March following his assassination.

Saudi Arabia is a close ally of Egypt, but also enjoys good relations with the United States. Egypt's surprise decision on the mandate came last week when it demanded the United Nations to Press Israel into hastening Middle East peace moves if it wanted the UN forces to remain.
