    THE POLICE PREFECT HAS TOLD THE PARIS CITY COUNCIL THAT THERE WERE 88 HOLD-UPS IN THE PARIS AREA IN 1962, AS AGAINST ONLY 25 IN 1960.HE THOUGHT ONE DIFFICULTY WAS THE NEW RECRUITS TO THE PARIS UNDERWORLD WHO HAD NO PREVIOUS CRIMINAL RECORD.

    TWO WEEKS AGO, THE FRENCH MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR ORDERED AN ESTIMATED 2,600 NATIONAL RIOT POLICE AND GENDARMES TO THE CAPITAL TO HELP LOCAL POLICE CHECK MOTORISTS AND PEDESTRIANS, AND GUARD BANKS AND STORES FROM FURTHER ROBBERIES.

    SEVERAL OF THE SPECIAL UNITS BROUGHT INTO PARIS FOR THE TASK WERE SAID TO HAVE HAD EXPERIENCE IN DEALING WITH THE SECRET ARMY ORGANISATION OAS.ANNOUNCING THE NEW MEASURES, THE MINISTER OF INTERIOR LAID THE BLAME FOR RECENT ROBBERIES IN FRANCE ON WHAT HE CALLED "THE FLOTSAM OF THE OAS".
