  • Description

The ashes of two U.S. Navy airmen who were shot down over China in the mid 60s, were handed over by the Chinese to the American Red Cross at Lown border Monday (December 15).

Shortly after the brief hand-over ceremony at the Chinese side of the border bridge, a representative of the American Red Cross, Mr. Ray Schindell, walked across the border with two boxes wrapped in white cloth.

The boxes containing the ashes are the U.S. Navy fliers, and identified as Lt. Commander Jimmy Buckley of Sioux City of Town and Kenneth Pugh, a navy parachute packer from Lancaster of California.

Buckley was shot down over Lwangsi Province of China on August 21, 1967, and Pugh was shot down over the Liu-Chow Peninsula, near Hainan Island on April 12, 1966.

The ashes later were down flown to Thailand for final processing before eventually taken back to the United States.
