    VICE-PRESIDENT ABEID KARUME OF TANZANIA AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT OF ZANZIBAR ATTENDED YESTERDAY'S (SUNDAY) PARADE AND MASS RALLY TO MARK THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1964 REVOLUTION IN ZANZIBAR.

    ABOUT A THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED AT COOPERS GROUND IN ZANZIBAR TO WATCH A PROCESSION OF YOUNG PIONEERS, CIVIL SERVANTS AND POLICE, FOLLOWED BY A MARCH PAST THE ARMED FORCES. THE VICE-PRESIDENT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE, AND BY COLONEL HAMID, THE HEAD OF THE ARMED FORCES IN ZANZIBAR.

    DIPLOMATS AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM 34 COUNTRIES INCLUDING AN EAST GERMAN DEPUTY PREMIER ARE IN ZANZIBAR FOR THE CELEBRATIONS.

    IN HIS SPEECH TO THE RALLY MR. KARUME SAID THAT FOREIGN COUNTRIES SHOULD BE VALUED FOR WHAT THEY HAD DONE FOR ZANZIBAR EAST GERMANY HAD BUILT HOUSES, THE RUSSIANS HAD TRAINED THE ARMY AND THE UNITED STATES HAD BUILT A TECHNICAL COLLEGE. THE VICE-PRESIDENT ALSO WARNED THEY ALL NON-CITIZENS OF ZANZIBAR WOULD HAVE TO SEEK NATURALISATION BY MARCH 1ST OR THEY WOULD FORFEIT THE GOVERNMENT'S PROTECTION.

    REVOLUTION DAY WAS MARKED THROUGHOUT TANZANIA WITH SPECIAL PRAYERS IN MOSQUES AND CHURCHES. ZANZIBAR BECAME INDEPENDENT IN 1963, AND ON JANUARY 12TH 1964 THE SULTAN OF ZANZIBAR WAS OVERTHROWN AND EXILED. TANGANIKA AND ZANZIBAR COMBINED TO FORM TANZANIA LATER THAT YEAR.
