  • Description

Chicago's Mayor Richard J. Daley Wednesday (March 5) criticized the candidacy of former vice-president Hubert Humphrey.

Mayor Daley's remarks apparently were prompted by Humphrey's statement of a few days ago that Daley had not worked as hard for Humphrey's election as he might have.

At a news conference in Chicago, Daley said Humphrey did not do enough campaigning in Chicago's suburbs and in downstate Illinois.

In response to a reporter's question, Daley also said he did not feel that Humphrey was the strongest presidential candidate the Democratic party could have had, and implied that Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, brother of the late President John Kennedy and the late Senator Robert Kennedy, would have made a stronger candidate.
