  • Description

Market day in Leopoldville, Belgian Congo, - and a time for stocking up with farm produce, special delicacies - and of course the sought-after bargains.

For the womenfolk it is the week's big occasion. From the surrounding villages, native women, dressed in colourful flowing dress, their babies slung on their backs jostle side by side with their city sisters, smart in Western-style clothes.

And above the chatter and noise, the inevitable bartering, without which no market is complete.

Thronging in their hundreds around the stalls, the women find a choice of m any foodstuffs. Some rare and therefore expensive include Negro specialities...smoked fish from the Congo River...roasted flies...smoked monkey heads and shoulders. These bring high prices but are extremely popular. Natives love to eat the flies, and other small insects, dried, roasted or smoked.

When at last, their shopping bags are crammed with vegetables and cooking materials, the women make their heavily-laden journey home.
