  • Description

There has been a new spirit of public service in Portugal this weekend. While thousands of workers responded to Government appeal to work over Sunday to boost the economy, youngsters gathered to clean up Rossio Square in the capital.

The young volunteers peeled off posters and scraped the walls of 19th century monuments and gave the streets a good clean-up.

They were part of a mammoth, voluntary clean-up of political slogans and posters that have covered many walls in town since the April coup.

They were joined by hundreds of students, shop assistants and office workers. While the clean-up was on, shops, offices, public services, and factories remained open on the business-as-usual Sunday.

The Portuguese Government called for work on sunday to demonstrate that the country was not heading for anarchy as suggested by the former President Spincola, who resigned last week.

SYNOPSIS: The authorities have postponed the opening of the hunting season by one week to encourage more people to work on Sunday, and the Roman Catholic Church has given its blessing for working on the Sabbath.
