  • Description

President Nicolae Ceausescu of Rumania has been visiting Cambodia during his Far East tour, which has already taken him to China, North Korea, Vietnam and Laos.

SYNOPSIS: Welcoming the visit of the Rumanian President and Mrs. Ceausescu, Phnom Penh Radio said it marked historic progress in Rumanian-Cambodian relations.

Greeted by flag-waving crowds, the welcome was just as warm and elaborate as the one staged by the Chinese leadership in Peking, at the beginning of Mr. Ceausescu's Asian Tour. The President and his party were greeted by Cambodian Prime Minister Pol Pot.

Phnom Penh Radio, said the two countries faced the same task of defending national independence and sovereignty against imperialists and expansionists. Towards this, the two parties, peoples and governments need to sincerely understand and support each other, the Radio said. The two-day visit resulted in the signing of a treaty of friendship and co-operation. A joint communique said that Rumania and Cambodia pledged technical and economic co-operation and agreed to co-operate in the arts, science and technology and to develop contacts in commerce and economics. According to Reuters News Agency President Ceausescu was praised by the Chinese for Rumania's independent line from Moscow and neutrality in the ideological feud between the Soviet Union and China. The Rumanian President last visited the Far East in 1971.

President Ceausescu's visit to Cambodia gave Rumanian Television the opportunity to film the ancient royal capital, Angkor. The city -- first built in the ninth century and rebuilt 300 years later -- is a series of temple complexes, some Hindu and some Buddhist. It flourished for 500 years, but was abandoned in the 14th century. However, a community of Buddhist monks preserved the most famous of the temples, Angkor Wat. For some time it was a popular tourist venue, but has recently been closed to outsiders.
