  • Description

Over 100 fishing boats blocked Venice's famous Grand Canal on Friday (April 10) for more than an hour as fishermen staged a protest to oppose new fishing regulations.

During the demonstration, Venice normally heavy motorboat and gondola traffic was halted as the boats virtually closed off the Grand Canal. Tourist were delayed as they tried to move about the city. There were no incidents, however.

The fishermen want the Government to change the regulations which govern fishing methods both within and beyond the three-mile (4.8 kms) limit.

The fisherman, most of whom came from Chioggia, near Venice, carried placards some of which read: "Help for fishing, not fines" and "the fishermen ask to be able to fish".
