  • Description

United Nations Middle East envoy Gunnar Jarring arrived in Jerusalem on Friday (25 February) to confer with Israeli leaders in another bid to break the Middle East deadlock. He arrived just as a new crisis in Israeli-lebanese relations developed into armed conflict.

Dr. Jarring's visit to Jerusalem followed talks in Cairo and Amman with Egyptian and Jordanian leaders as part of his plan to resume his stalled peace mission to the Middle East.

SYNOPSIS: Israeli officials waited at Jerusalem's Lod Airport on Friday to meet Doctor Gunnar Jarring, the United Nations Middle East envoy. He was arriving for talks with Israeli leaders after discussions in Cairo and Amman with Egyptian and Jordanian officials. Doctor Jarring's visit came just as relations between Israel and Lebanon had deteriorated into armed conflict. Israeli troops and aircraft had just launched retaliatory raids into Lebanon following a recent increase in guerrilla attacks.

Doctor Jarring's current round of Middle East talks are being held to try and reactivate his stalled peace mission. He made no statement to newsmen when he arrived in Jerusalem, nor did he discuss the Israeli-Lebanese conflict during Friday's first round of talks. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesmen said that Israel viewed Doctor Jarring's visit with favour, but that Israel would concede no withdrawal from occupied territories in order to re-participate in the peace talks.
