    PRESIDENT ALBERT-BERNARD BONGO OF GARON ARRIVED IN BRAZZAVILLE LAST SATURDAY (7 DECEMBER) TO TAKE PART IN A CONFERENCE OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN CUSTOMS AND ECONOMIC UNION (UDEAC). BESIDES GABON, CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE AND CAMEROUN ARE MEMBERS OF THE UNION.

    PRESIDENT BONGO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS WIFE AND HIS VICE-PRESIDENT, M. MEBIANG. THEY WERE GREETED AT THE AIRPORT BY MAJOR ALFRED RAOUL, THE PRIME MINISTER AND ACTING HEAD OF STATE AND BY OTHER MEMBERS OF THE GOVERNMENT.

    A LARGE CROWD WAS ON HAND TO WELCOME THE GABONESE PRESIDENT.

    THE ANNUAL HEADS OF STATE CONFERENCE OF UDEAC, WHICH BEGINS TODAY, IS EXPECTED TO DEAL MAINLY WITH PROBLEMS CAUSED BY THE DECISION OF CHAD AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC TO LEAVE THE ORGANISATION EARLIER THIS YEAR. THE CONFERENCE FOLLOWS LAST WEEK'S MEETING OF MEMBER-STATE FINANCE MINISTERS.

    BOTH COUNTRIES ARE NOW MEMBERS, WITH CONGO-KINSHASA, OF THE UNION OF CENTRAL AFRICAN STATES (UEAC).

    IN ADDITION TO PRESIDENT BONGO, PRESIDENT AHMADOU AHIDJO OF CAMEROUN IS ALSO IN BRAZZAVILLE FOR THE UDEAC CONFERENCE.

    PRESIDENT JEAN-BEDEL BOKASSA OF THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC AND CHAD'S PRESIDENT FRANCO IS TOMBALBAYE HAVE ALSO BEEN INVITED TO ATTEND THE TWO-DAY CONFERENCE.

    ACCORDING TO UDEAC SOURCES IN BRAZZAVILLE, CHAD AND THE CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC MIGHT ASK TO REJOIN THE ORGANISATION.
