  • Description

THE BRITISH YACHT 'PROSPECT OF WHITBY' WON TODAY'S (5 AUGUST) BRITANNIA CUP SAILING RACE AT COWES, ISLE OF WIGHT.

THE BRITANNIA IS ONE OF FOUR RACES WHICH COUNT FOR THE ADMIRAL'S CUP, A TROPHY FOR OFF-SHORE RACERS WHICH IS A BI-ANNUAL EVENT AT COWES WEEK.

TEAMS OF THERE BOATS FROM ELEVEN COUNTRIES ARE COMPETING FOR THE ADMIRAL'S CUP. BUT THEY WERE ONLY ONE CONTINGENT IN THE 87-BOAT LINE UP FOR THE TODAY'S RACE, WHICH STRETCHED FROM COWES TO STONE POINT.

RACE OFFICER STEWART MORRIS HAD SET A COURSE TAKING THE FLEES ON A LONG WESTWARD STRIKE TO HAMPSTEAD LEDGE. THE WIND, CLOSE ON THE BEAN, MADE FOR A FAST PASSAGE, BUT THE GOING WAS ROUGH, AND THE TIDE, MOVING EAST, HUNDRED THE PROGRESS OF ALL BUT THE FIRST BOATS THROUGH.

THOUGH THE AMERICAN EX-12 METRE 'EAGLE' TOOK AND HELD THE LEAD TO THE END, IT WAS THE SMALLER SLOWER 'PROSPECT' WHICH TOOK THE TROPHY WHEN THE ADJUSTMENT FOR HANDICAPS WAS MADE.

THE ITALIAN BOAT 'MABELLE' WAS SECOND, AND AN AMERICAN ENTRY 'RED ROOSTER' CAME THIRD.

YACHTS FROM FRANCE, ITALY, FINLAND AND THE ARGENTINE WERE DISQUALIFIED DURING THE RACE.

THOUGH THE RACE PUTS BRITAIN IN SECOND PLACE IN THE RUNNING FOR THE ADMIRAL'S CUP, AUSTRALIA THE TROPHY HOLDERS DID WELL ENOUGH TO INCREASE THEIR OVERALL LEAD IN THE TROPHY RACE. THEY NOW LEAD BY 235 POINTS TO BRITAIN'S 195. THE AUSTRALIAN BOAT 'KOOMOOLOO' HAS LODGED A PROTEST AGAINST A BRITISH YACHT 'CASSE TETE III', WHICH FINISHED NINTH TODAY. IF THE PROTEST IS UPHELD, BRITAIN WILL LOSE ANOTHER 23 POINTS.
