  • Description

MR IAN SMITH, THE RHODESIAN PRIME MINISTER, WAS RETURNED TO POWER WITH A CRUSHING VICTORY IN THE GENERAL ELECTION YESTERDAY (FRIDAY). DESPITE THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING THE ELECTION, POLLING WENT OFF QUIETLY. BUT THE ELECTION BROUGHT PROTESTS FROM INDIA, WHO WITHDREW ITS ENVOY FROM SALISBURY.

POLLING WENT ON THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WITH LONG QUEUES OUTSIDE MANY STATIONS. VOTING WAS HEAVY AMONG THE MAINLY-WHITE ELECTORATE, BUT AFRICAN NATIONALIST LEADERS CALLED FOR A BOYCOTT OF THE ELECTION. HOWEVER, AMONG THE MINORITY AFRICAN ELECTORATE, SOME DID VOTE.

SIR ROY WELENSKY, ONCE LEADER OF THE NOW DEFUNCT RHODESIAN FEDERATION, CAST HIS VOTE. AFTER THE FEDERATION'S BREAK-UP, HE MADE AN UNSUCCESSFUL BID TO ENTER THE RHODESIAN PARLIAMENT.

WITH A LANDSLIDE VICTORY FOR THE RULING RHODESIAN FRONT, THE ELECTION WAS SEEN AS A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE IN MR SMITH'S POLICIES. MR SMITH, WHO HIMSELF WAS RETURNED UNOPPOSED, SAID TODAY HE WOULD STEP UP INDEPENDENCE NEGOTIATIONS. HE HAS THREATENED THAT IF TALKS BREAK DOWN RHODESIA WILL SEIZE INDEPENDENCE.

MEANWHILE, INDIA HAS BROKEn OFF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH RHODESIA. ITS CHARGE D'AFFAIRES IN SALISBURY, MR KUNTI GAIND, AND HIS FAMILY PACKED THEIR BAGS AND LEFT FOR LUSAKA IN NEIGHBOURING ZAMBIA. HE SAID INDIA'S STAND WAS THAT RHODESIA SHOULD HAVE MAJORITY RULE, AND THOUGHT THE ELECTION WOULD LEAD TO THE WHITE GOVERNMENT SEIZING INDEPENDENCE. MR SMITH SAID INDIA'S MOVE WAS "JUST ANOTHER PRE-ELECTION TRICK BY ANOTHER AFRO-ASIAN COUNTRY."
