  • Description

The Shah of Persia - on a week's state visit to Austria - and his host President Schaerf, visited May 17 Vienna's Spanish Riding School, the oldest of its kind in Europe cherishing the best classical tradition of horsemanship in its purest form.

Highlights included a pas de trois and a quadrille with eight horses dancing to a Chopin Polonaise.

The School, dating back to the middle of the 16th century, takes its name from the sole use of Spanish horses and their offsprings. In the 18th century, under the patronage of Emperor Charles V, craftsmen over six years fashioned the magnificent Riding Hall - a unique Austrian showpiece to have come out unscathed through war and revolution.

During his visit, the Shah will see the Hapsburg imperial crown jewels, attend a gala performance at the state opera, and a reception at the 18th century palace at Schoenbrunn.
