  • Description

A bomb planted in a refrigerator exploded in a busy shopping street in the heart of the Jewish sector of Jerusalem on Friday (4 July) killing 13 people and wounding 62.

Men, women and children were cut down by a hail of glass, metal and wood fragments in the crowded street as shoppers stocked up for the sabbath. It was the bloodiest guerrilla attack in the city since 1968 when another blast killed 13 people.

Within minutes of the explosion Israeli security forces detained 300 Arabs in the vicinity for questioning. A short time later a spokesman for the Palestine Liberation Organisation in the Syrian ???, Damascus, claimed one its guerrilla groups had been responsible for the "heroic action".

The casualty toll was listed as: five men, six women, a girl of nine and a boy of 12 killed and 62 wounded -- including six in a grave condition undergoing emergency surgery.

After a flurry of similar guerrilla attacks on Jerusalem and Tel Aviv at the turn of the year, Israeli aircraft raided alleged Palestinian bases on the outskirts of Beirut, capital of neighbouring Lebanon. Following Friday's bombing a Jewish extremist group known as T.N.T. -- standing for Terror Against Terror -- took to the streets urging "Death to the Arabs".

The bomb attack came on the eve of crucial weekend discussions on Israel's next move towards peace in the Middle East.
