    THE RUSSIANS DEFEATED EAST GERMANY 1-0. YUGOSLAVIA TOOK THE BRONZE AND ITALY FINISHED FOURTH.

    THE SOVIET UNION PROVED THEMSELVES THE MASTERS OF EUROPEAN SWIMMING - IN ALL, THE RUSSIANS WON 12 GOLD MEDALS, SEVEN SILVER MEDALS AND FIVE BRONZES. EAST GERMANY WON FOUR GOLDS, SIX SILVERS AND FIVE BRONZES, AND HOLLAND WAS THIRD, IN THE FINAL MEDAL TABLE, WITH FOUR GOLD MEDALS AND A SILVER AND A BRONZE. FRANCE WAS FOURTH, BRITAIN FIFTH AND ITALY SIXTH.
