Background: Celebrations marking the 82nd birthday of Emperor Haile Selassie were held throughout Ethiopia on Tuesday (July 23). The Emperor, who has seen many of his powers eroded over the past year, seemed healthy and in good spirits.
In the capital, Addis Ababa, a 21 gun salute was fired at six o'clock in the morning to start the day's celebrations. The Emperor attended a church service soon after.
Among the other activities, members of foreign delegations went to the Grand Palace to present gifts and their wishes for continued good health. Members of the Government were also present.
The Emperor was born in Erjersa Goro on July 23, 1892. Throughout his life he has been the backbone of Ethiopia. Only recently has his command been questioned. There have been internal troubles and it was only within recent years that the country experienced its first demonstration by the people.
Whatever shortcomings Emperor Selassie may have, he has given the nation better education and social progress and made it a known nation throughout the world. Ethiopia was one of the first nations to join the League of Nations......forerunner of the United nations.
