Russian works of art, valued, if such a thing is possible, at about 30 million U.S. dollars (GBP 15 million sterling) hang on the walls of the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Under the honourary patronage of America's First Lady, Mrs. Betty Ford, the exhibition comprises an outstanding selection of paintings from "The Hermitage" by renowned European artists. As well, the paintings of Soviet artists have been lent by The state Russian Museum.

When the Washington exhibition closes in September, the paintings will tour the country and hang in some of the most prominent museums in the United States. Similarly, a reciprocal gesture is planned whereby American art works will go to the Soviet Union for an exhibition tour.
