TRANSCRIPT: REPORTER: "A cross-sydney Harbour race has long been the plan of promoters, and today after much preparation it happened. The two contestants -- Sydney's Des Renford. 49. known as the swimming grandfather -- and 28-year-old Londoner Kevin Murphy. Both had conquered the English Channel numerous times but today there were non freezing currents or howling gales, just each other. Both men estimated they would need to swim three Kilometres an hour non-stop for the entire 25-kilometres of the race-route across the harbour and then several laps around the area of the Opera House. Murphy began quickly and within 20 minutes swimming inside a shark-proof cage he had opened a lead of almost a kilometre. The Englishman had been severely affected by the heat during his training here and had to be completely covered in sun-burn cream to stop further burning. Renford in the meantime was content to stay behind and bide his time. Midway through the race Murphy still had the lead but Renford was closing the gap. ...For the sprint section it was....out of the shark proof cages and several laps of Farm Cove. The organisers still weren't taking any chances and organised 12 skin-divers and surfboard riders to stand guard just in case. And then to the finish line at the Opera House -- Murphy was still ahead and he broke the tape five minutes ahead of Renford."
