One of the world's most valuable gardens has been developed by a citizen in Taipei, Taiwan, Sixty-five-year-old Lin Jung-hsien started gardening as a hobby -- but it's now blossomed into a concern worth nearly a million U.S. dollars.
In this garden there are 2,000 varieties of orchid -- a million plants in all. He developed his interest in the flower ten years ago while selling cosmetics. Now he devotes all his time to growing the flowers, and has turned his house into a laboratory to study orchid growth.

He's Mr. Lin Jung-hsien -- and he has turned a gardening hobby into a million-dollar concern.
The secret of his success derives from a special method of tissue culture for growing the orchids. First the tissue is cut, then it's placed in a special incubating jar for storage. Orchids propagated by bulbs -- a traditional method -- produce only one plant from on bulb. But using Mr. Lin's tissue culture method, one plant may reproduce on unlimited number of bulbs.
After three months of being nurtured by a secret compound in the incubating flask, the tissue has grown into a seedling. This now leaves Mr. Lin's house, which serves as both laboratory and store, for the greenhouse.
In the carefully regulated hothouse atmosphere, the seedlings are prepared for washing and subsequent transplanting Mr. Lin developed his interest in the orchid ten years ago, when he was selling cosmetics. He studied horticulture and was soon devoting all his time to growing orchids.
The end result. It takes fully five years before the seedling grows into a flowering plant. Mr. Lin grows a total of two-thousand varieties, including many imported orchids worth up to mine-hundred dollars a plant. Mr. Lin's extraordinary garden currently contains a million orchids. But by the end of the year, he reckons that his new propagation methods will have produced two-and-a-half million blooms.
