    MEMBERS OF THE MALAYAN SECURITY FORCES WHO DIED FIGHTING THE COMMUNISTS DURING THE 12 YEARS OF MALAYAN EMERGENCY, HAVE NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN...A MONUMENT DEDICATED TO THEM WAS UNVEILED IN KUALA LUMPUR'S HILLTOP LAKE GARDEN BY THE MALAYSIAN KING YESTERDAY (TUESDAY).

    THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY WHICH BEGAN IN JUNE 1948 ENDED ON JULY 31, 1960.

    THE NATIONAL MONUMENT, OF BRONZE AND MARBLE, WAS BUILT AT A COST OF MALAYSIAN $1.5 MILLION (ABOUT GBP177-THOUSAND STERLING). IT CONSIST OF SEVEN BRONZE STATUES, EACH 24 FEET HIGH -- THE BIGGEST BRONZE MONUMENT GROUPING IN THE WORLD. THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE GROUP IS 243 TONS.

    THE IDEA OF A NATIONAL MONUMENT WAS FIRST CONCEIVED BY THE MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, WHEN HE SAW THE IWO JIMA MONUMENT IN WASHINGTON DURING HIS 1960 VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES.

    ADDRESSING THE CROWD, THE TUNKU DESCRIBED THE MONUMENT AS A "SYMBOL OF THE DOUBLE VICTORY OF THE MALAYAN PEOPLE -- THE TRIUMPH OF RIGHT OVER EVIL AND THE UNSHAKABLE FAITH WE HAVE IN OUR COUNTRY."
    BEFORE UNVEILING THE MONUMENT, THE DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, INCLUDING VISITING SOUTH KOREA'S PRESIDENT AND MADAME CHUNG HEE PARK, OBSERVED TWO MINUTES SILENCE AS A MARK OF RESPECT TO THE DEAD.
