  • Description

Journalists throughout Pakistan staged a 24-hour strike on Monday (July 24) in protest at the official closure of the Karachi English-language daily, The Sun.

The newspaper was closed-down last week for defying censorship restrictions on news about a volent language dispute between Urdu and Sindhi speakers in Sindhi Province.

Riots broke out in Karachi as other workers struck in sympathy with the journalists. One person was killed and eight others were injured when police fired on a group of striking workers. Curfews were imposed in parts of Karachi as a result.

The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists called the strike after police raided the offices of The Sun, seized all available copies of the newspaper and sealed the printing press.

The central government in Rawalpindi said it ordered the closure of The Sun because the newspaper printed the purported text of a Sindhi Provincial Government ordinance on the language issue without clearance by the censor.

Officials in Rawalpindi said the newspaper had incited disorder.

There have been violent riots in Sindhi Province over a Provincial Government move to make Sindhi the official language. The majority of people in ???rachi and other urban centres are Urdu speakers.
