Britain and the U.S.A. on Tuesday (22 May) vetoed a resolution in the United Nations Security Council, that would have extended sanctions against Rhodesia. Voting on the resolution was eleven in favour, two against, with two abstentions. The resolution could not be adopted, because of the votes against it cast by Britain and the United States.
Along with France, Britain and the USA abstained in a vote on another resolution, which would have called on the United States to repeal legislation, allowing the importation of Rhodesian chrome ore or nickel. But these countries which did not vote for the resolution will not consider themselves bound by its provisions.
Discussion the question of Rhodesia's recently acquired Boeing 720's, the U.S. Ambassador at the U.N., John Scali, said the U.S. government had not authorise the sale of Boeings to Rhodesia, and would not authorise the servicing of them, or the sale of spare parts.
