  • Description

A protest rally was held in Saigon, (Ho Chi Minh City), in South Vietnam, Wednesday (18 February) in support of the Government and to oppose signs of a revolt among Vietnam's two million Catholics.

About a thousand people took part in the demonstration, which was held at the Workers Sports Club. Two Catholic priests were among the speakers.

The rally followed an announcement by the Archbishop of Saigon, Nguyen Van Binh, recently. It appeared in the official Government newspaper and said that the Church would reorganise its structure and personnel and there would be re-education classes in all dioceses. The statement said the church would not support those who oppose the present administration in the name of religion.

The announcement came soon after cases of rebel activity, publicised by the Government. In one incident, a group of armed rebels held a church in Saigon in a night-long gun battle with security forces. Two were killed and five apparently arrested. One of them was said to be the Parish priest.
