• Short Summary

LORD SHACKLETON, MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO, ARRIVED IN ADEN YESTERDAY TO ACT AS ON-THE-SPOT ADVISOR TO THE BRITISH AUTHORITIES, FOLLOWING LAST WEEK'S ABHORTIVE VISIT BY THE THREE-MAN UNITED NATIONS MISSION.

  • Description

LORD SHACKLETON WITH BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER; LORD SHACKLETON SPEAKS AT PRESS CONFERENCE (SOF).

SHACKLETON: "WELL, I THINK IT'S VERY EARLY FOR ME TO EXPRESS ANY OPINIONS AT ALL. THE GOVERNMENT HAVE ALWAYS MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY DO WANT TO GET A BROAD-BASED GOVERNMENT IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THIS INCLUDES THE NATIONALIST GROUPS. THE PROBLEM IS TO GET THEM INTO THE GOVERNMENT".

QUESTION: "CAN I ASK YOU, SIR, EXACTLY, WHAT YOUR WORKING RELATIONSHIP WILL BE WITH THE HIGH COMMISSIONER?"

SHACKLETON: "THE HIGH COMMISSIONER, FOR WHOM, AS GEORGE BROWN SAID THE OTHER DAY, THERE IS NOT ONLY THE GREATEST CONFIDENCE BUT VERY GREAT ADMIRATION FOR HIM IN ENGLAND, CONTINUES. QUITE HONESTLY, I WOULD HOPE THAT MY JOB WILL BE TO HELP HIM. ANOTHER WAY TO PUT IT IS THAT HIS 'BOSS' IS GEORGE BROWN, THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, AND ON THIS OCCASION THE IMPORTANCE IS SUCH THAT I'M OUT HERE SO TO SPEAK, AS GEORGE BROWN'S 'ALTER EGO'. THE LENGTH OF TIME I STAY WILL DEPEND ON SO MANY MATTERS THAT IT'S REALLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO SAY, I MAY WELL GO BACK AND REPORT AND COME OUT AGAIN".
