Background: The Kenyan National football team returned home on Tuesday (11 November) to a victorious welcome in Nairobi after winning the East and Central African Challenge Cup.
The team was met by government leaders including the Kenyan Assistant Minister for Housing and Social Services, Dr. J. Ojiambo.
As the team stepped down from the plane, a large crowd which had gathered to greet their heroes roared their welcome. The large trophy cup won by the Kenyans was hoisted high by team members to the delight of the crowd.
Later the team was taken to an official reception in a city hotel. They were driven through the streets on Nairobi on the back of a lorry from which national flags fluttered.
SYNOPSIS: There were scenes of jubilation at Nairobi airport in Kenya when the Kenyan National football team returned victorious after winning the East and Central African Challenge Cup. The team became champions when they defeated Malawi three goals to two on penalty kicks after more than one hundred and twenty minutes of play.
A large crowd had gathered at the airport to greet their football heroes who obliged the crowd by bearing aloft the large trophy they had won.
There to greet the team were government officials including the Kenyan Assistant Minister for Housing and Social Services, Dr. J.Ojiambo, who told the players that they had made Kenya proud.
The team was paraded through the streets of Nairobi on the back of an open lorry which took the players to a reception at a city hotel. The President of Kenya, Mr. Jomo Kenyatta sent a special message of congratulations to the team for what he termed, "their magnificent win".
