  • Description

An 8-millimetre film has become available of Sunday's (2 August) collision in the Strait of Georgia, about 3 miles north of Victoria, British Columbia, involving a Soviet Freighter and a local ferry-boat.

The film, taken by a passenger on another boat, shows the Soviet ship moving in from left to right to slice into the ferry amidships.

A mother and her child and a teenage girl aboard the ferry were killed. At least seven others were injured.

Neither ship sank, although the freighter's bow was embedded 100 feet in the ferry's port side. The freighter was able to pull back from the crash, and later appeared undamaged.

The ferry, the 3,541-ton British Columbia Ferry Queen of Victoria, used for moving cars and people, and the freighter, the Sergei Yesinen, registered at Odessa, ran together shortly after noon in the Active Pass, a narrow passage through the Gulf Islands in the strait between the Canadian mainland and Vancouver Island.

On Tuesday (August 4) a Vancouver Court ordered the arrest of the 10,400-ton Soviet freighter in Vancouver harbour.

A writ from the British Columbia Highways Department was filed seeking compensation for damages sustained by the ferry for alleged negligent navigation by those in charge of the Soviet vessel.

A Government warrant was then issued ordering the Soviet freighter to be held pending further direction from the Provincial Government which owns the Queen of Victoria.

It also demanded that the officers aboard the ship appear in the Court within seven days.
