    MALAGASY FOREIGN MINISTER, M. ALBERT SYLLA, AND 40 OTHERS DIED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WHEN AN AIR MADAGASCAR DC4 AIRLINER CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM TANANRIVE. ANOTHER 35 PEOPLE ON BOARD THE AIRLINERS WERE INJURED, AT LEAST 15 SERIOUSLY, THE AIRLINER ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT.

    THE AIRLINER PLOUGHED INTO A SWAMP AT THE END OF THE RUNWAY AT TANANARIVE'S NEW IVATO AIRPORT AND BODIES WERE STREWN AROUND THE WRECKAGE.

    THE AIRCRAFT WAS LEAVING ON A LOCAL FLIGHT TO TAMATAVE ON THE EAST COAST AND DIEGO SUAREZ ON THE ISLAND'S NORTHERN TIP.

    M. SYLLA'S REMAINS WERE BROUGHT TO TANANARIVE, THE CAPITAL, WHERE THEY LAY IN STATE LAST NIGHT. PRESIDENT PHILIBERT TSIRANANA CUT SHORT A TOUR OF SOUTHERN. MADAGASCAR TO ATTEND THE STATE FUNERAL ON SATURDAY (22 JULY).
