  • Description

The final chapter in the tragic story of the Manchester United air disaster was written on Monday, February 10, when the bodies of the 21 victims were flown out to Manchester, England, on a BEA Viscount Airliner.

After the coffins - which had been specially flown from England - had been carried on board, huge banks of flowers were handed over to the crew to place inside the 'plane.

While a guard-of-honour from the Munich Police Corps stood stiffly at attention, the final departure of the victims was watched by representatives of the Bavarian State Government, the City of Munich, and the German Football Association.

Representing the GFA was the Federal Trainer, Sepp Herberger, who also presented a wreath on behalf of the Association.

The final tribute came from the ground staff of the Munich Riem Airport who handed their own boquet to the airliner steward before it took off.
