There are 650 soldiers in the airlift. They replace the 32nd and 33rd Battalions, now completing their six months' service in the Congo. And they will be serving under another Irishman - the new Supreme Commander of the U.N. Congo force, Lieutenant-General Sean McKeown, who left Dublin for Leopoldville a few days earlier.

At a special Mass for the troops before the airlift began, the chaplain to the 34th Battalion, the Rev. John F Morrissey, said:"Yours is a mission of peace, friendship and goodwill."
The aircraft - "Operation C" (for Congo) - was strictly a military operation, with no freewill handshakes or tearful goodbyes. These took place earlier in barracks. The airlift, supervised by a ten--man team of U.S. airmen, is expected to conclude Jan 12.
