  • Description

These are old Dutch newspapers. Some of them are the oldest extant in Europe.

There are forty-five specimens of the Nieuwe Tydinghen bound in one volume. The earliest is dated 1618 and tells the story of a sea dual between Spaniards and Dutchmen off the Philippines.

The remainder of the specimens in the volume cover the five years after 1618. A feature of the Nieuwe Tydinghen is its woodcut illustrations, and if fact was the first press to be illustrated in any way.

Abraham Verhoeven, of Antwerp, was the printer of these papers, and had his representatives, or reporters, located in the north and south of the country.

The antiquarian Menno Hertzberger acquired this unique collection at an auction for 34,000 Belgian francs.
