  • Description

PRESIDENT JOHNSON DESPATCHED HIS ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF STATE FRO AFRICAN AFFAIRS, MR. GEORGE MENNON WILLIAMS, ON A WHISTLE-STOP TOUR OF AFRICAN STATES TO EXPLAIN THE U.S. POLICY ON VIETNAM TO GOVERNMENT LEADERS.

FIRST STOP ON THE TOUR WAS MOROCCO. SECOND WAS ALGIERS, WHERE MR. WILLIAMS MET THE PRESIDENT, COLONEL BOUMEDIENNE, AND THE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. ABDELAZIZ BOUTEFLIKA.

MR. WILLIAMS EXPLAINED THAT THE AIM OF HIS TRIP WAS "TO EXPOUND THE POSITION OF THE UNITED STATES CONCERNING THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE PROBLEM" AND THE "SINCERE DESIRE" OF HIS COUNTRY TO RESTORE PEACE IN THAT PART OF THE WORLD.

ALGERIA MADE IT CLEAR IN A RECENT SOVIET-ALGERIAN COMMUNIQUE THAT IT SUPPORTS THE NORTH VIETNAMESE POSITION ON VIETNAM.

MR. WILLIAM FLEW FROM ALGIERS TO TUNIS, WHERE HE HAD TALKS WITH PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA, AND THEN ON TO ADDIS ABABA AND NAIROBI.
