    YOUNG ISRAELI SETTLERS YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) MOVED INTO AN ABANDONED JORDANIAN ARMY BARRACKS IN ETZION, IN THE HEBRON HILLS SOUTH OF JERUSALEM, IN THE SECOND STAGE OF A PLAN TO SET UP THREE JEWISH VILLAGES IN TERRITORY CAPTURED FROM ARAB FORCES IN THE MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT IN JUNE.

    ETZION WAS PREVIOUSLY A JEWISH SETTLEMENT, BUT WAS DESTROYED IN THE PALESTINE WAR IN 1948. IT HAD BEEN A KIBBUTZ FOR NEARLY A DECADE.

    THE AREA IS IN THE HEBRON HILLS SOUTH OF JERUSALEM. FROM DAMASCUS. THE VILLAGE OF ETZION WILL BE LARGELY OCCUPIED BY THE CHILDREN OF THE ORIGINAL SETTLERS OF THE AREA.

    THE FIRST CONVOY OF NEW SETTLERS ARRIVED AT THE ABANDONED BARRACKS AREAS YESTERDAY LED BY AN OLD ARMOURED BUS WHICH USED TO RUN BETWEEN JERUSALEM AND ETZION BEFORE THE 1948 HOSTILITIES.

    ETZION IS ONE OF THREE NEW SETTLEMENTS TO BE ESTABLISHED BY ISRAELIS ON LAND PREVIOUSLY HELD BY JORDANIANS.

    THE NEW SETTLERS AT EYTION MOVED INTO THEIR ENCAMPMENT AT 9 O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING. THE ENTOURAGE INCLUDED THE ISRAELI MINISTER OF RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, ZERA WAHRHAFTIC, AND THE HEAD OF THE JEWISH AGENCY SETTLEMENT DEPARTMENT, RAJAHAN WEITZ, AND THE FOUNDER OF THE KIBBUTZ SYSTEM, MR HARTZFELD.

    IMMEDIATELY AFTER A SHORT CEREMONY, PERFORMED BY MR WAHRHAFTIC, THE NEW MEMBERS OF THE SETTLEMENT BEGAN THEIR PROGRAMME OF RECONSTRUCTION.
