    Background: Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Nikolai Firyubin has been visiting India for talks with government officials on bilateral and international ???
    He called on Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Thursday (4 March) and held a brief post mortem on the progress of the talks.

    The discussions are part of regular exchanges between the Soviet Union and India, the last round being in November last year when Indian Foreign Secretary Kewal Singh went to Moscow.

    It is understood that during his Indian visit, the Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister conveyed to government officials, Russia's appreciation of non-alignment and the efforts being made by non-aligned nations in getting a better deal in world forums.

    Also visiting India was Sweden's Foreign Minister Sven Andersson who led a delegation of officials for talks with Indian government ministers. Mr. Andersson was received by Mrs. Gandhi a few hours after she was visited by Mr. Firyubin.

    The Swedish delegation held discussions with Indian officials on the possibility of cooperation in science and technology.

    The two delegations agreed that detente was important and must be supported.

    They also reiterated that they would work together for general and complete disarmament.
