  • Description

About 75 Vietcong and North Vietnamese soldiers, who seized part of the resort city of Dalat on Saturday (30 May), slipped past hundred of encircling South Vietnamese troops on Sunday (May 31), and escaped into the surrounding hills.

Dalat is a traditional resort area and for a long time there seemed to be an unwritten agreement that no fighting should take place there. But since The offensive, Dalat has been attacked periodically and with increasing frequency during May. Large numbers of civilians fled the city during the current outbreak of fighting.

On Sunday (31 May) the North Vietnamese and Vietcong remnant of the attacking force held a Roman Catholic Seminary for 24 hours before escaping under cover to darkness. Military officials said that 47 attacking soldiers had been killed when they struck with mortars and ground assaults against 13 installations in and around Dalat. The South Vietnamese losses were put at 16 killed and two wounded.

Dalat is South Vietnam's ninth-largest city with a population of about 77,000.
