At a special session of the Japanese Diet, Tokyo, July 18, 61-year-old Mr. Hayato Ikeda was formally elected by the Diet to succeed Mr. Kishi as Prime Minister.
Present for the occasion were US Ambassador Douglas MacArthur, and Emperor Hirohito, who read to Parliament the message of convocation handed to him by Diet Speaker Tsuruhei Matsuno. Before handing over the message the Speaker himself addressed the House.
Ikeda gained 375 votes out of a total of 434. Candidates Inejiro Asanuma of the Socialist Party and Suehiro Nishio of the Democratic Socialist Party gained 121 and 38 respectively.
After the Diet voted to confirm the Liberal Democratic choice for next Premier, Ikeda was faced with the task of forming the new Cabinet and with making Liberal Democratic Party appointment. The composition of the new Government is expected to be made known at the end of this week.
Ikeda is rated forceful character with strong convictions. He is pledged to follow a strong line with the Communist inspired minority which has been helping to stir up trouble over the new US Security Pact. He is expected to maintain good relations with the west while trying to expand Japanese trade with Russia and Communist China.
It was at a reception held to mark Mr. Ikeda's election as Liberal Democratic Party President and Prime Minister-designate, that Mr. Kishi was stabbed by an ultra-nationalist. Ikeda was Kishi's Minister of Trade and Industry.
