Background: Pope John Paul the Second had message of optimism when he returned to Rome on Sunday (10 June) from the historic nine-day visit to his native land. On his arrival at Rome's Ciampino airport, the Pope claimed that the faith of Poland was a living and pulsating reality.

SYNOPSIS: The Pontiff's aircrafts had flown direct to Rome from Krakow, where he had served as Archbishop before being elected as Pope in September last year. Just before leaving Krakow, he had blessed an estimated one and a half million people at an open-air Mass, said to have been the largest ever held in Poland. He was welcomed back to the Eternal City by Italian Guilio Andreotti and other leading politicians.

Though suntanned, the Pope looked tired after the physical and emotional exertions of his Poland visit, which the Western Press described as a triumph for himself and the Roman Catholic Church. At fifty-eight, he is young by Papal standards, and his health appears sound, but Vatican sources said on his return that they did not expect he would visit Poland again.

Signore Andreotti welcomed the Pontiff back, and thanked him, on behalf of Italians and Roman Catholics, for his effort aborad.

When Pope John Paul responded, he sounded hoarse and weary. He thanked the polish authorities and the Bishops there for making his visit possible. He had said just before departing from Krakow a short time before , that his heart could never part from Poland, the land of his birth. Here, in Rome he said the faith of Poland was a reality, living and pulsating, he felt that it contained, like all true expressions of faith, a message of hope and optimism, After he flew later from the airport to the Vatican by helicopter, the Pope told a welcoming crowd of one hundred thousand that one undeniable result of his visit was that he had lost his voice.
