  • Description

THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT TODAY (SATURDAY) FORCIBLY EVICTED THREE STAFF MEMBERS FROM THE BUILDING FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY THE CHIANG KAI-SHEK REGIME IN PARIS. FRANCE CONSIDERS THE BUILDING IS NOW THE PROPERTY OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

ONE OF THE THREE STAFF MEMBERS WAS AN AILING MAN 73-YEARS-OLD. HE HAD TO BE DRIVEN OFF IN AN AMBULANCE WHILE BAGS AND CASES WERE LOADED INTO A TRUCK UNDER GUARD OF UNIFORMED POLICE AND DETECTIVES. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS. PARIS AND THE TAIWAN REGIME SEVERED RELATIONS WHEN FRANCE RECOGNISED THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA IN 1964. MOST OF THE STAFF LEFT THE EMBASSY BUILDING BUT A SKELETON STAFF REMINED AND THE TAIWAN REGIME RENAMED THE BUILDING THEIR UNESCO DELEGATION HEADQUARTERS.

A FRENCH FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESMAN SAID TODAY'S MOVE FOLLOWED AT LEAST THREE REQUESTS TO THE TAIWAN PEOPLE TO LEAVE. IT WAS A JURIDICAL AND NOT A POLITICAL OPERATION. HE SAID THE STAFF WERE NOT BEING EXPELLED FROM FRANCE.
