SPIRO AGNEW: "I regret to say that sources close to the investigation, those sources so frequently quoted were indeed that, persons involved in the investigatory process. The national news magazine account headed 'Heading Toward an Indictment, published yesterday and packed up by the wire services, freely quotes unnamed Justice Department officials. I can only assume from this account that some Justice Department officials have decided to indict me in the Press weather or not the evidence supports their position. This is a clear and outrageous effort to influence the outcome of possible Grand Jury deliberations. And so not ???thstanding my initial decision not to comment I have had to respond publicly to the continuing charges. Any person who has been in politics and government for any years is aware of the personal and political hazards of unsubstantiated charges, rumours, innuendo and speculation. I have been subjected to these before and I am costumed to fighting this kind of battle. What I have found intolerable however is the impact which this smear publicity may have on the rights of others, particularly private citizens who have been swept into this highly publicised investigation."

Time magazin???imed this week that a third Maryland engineering consultant had now ???tified to the Grand Jury that he made contributions to Mr. Agnew about five times a year when he was Governor of Maryland and less frequently since he became Vice-President.

The Vice-President recently called the allegations "demand lies."
At Tuesday's press conference Mr. Agnew said he had asked the U.S. Attorney-General Mr. Elliot Richardson to carry out an investigation into the source of the leaks.

Later on Tuesday Mr. Richardson said he had no evidence that any leaks on the progress of the investigation had come from the Justice Department but disciplinary action would be taken if any Department employee was found to be responsible.
