Background: AUSTRIA -- AND A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK TO ENSURE THIS MONTH'S WINTER OLYMPICS GO AHEAD AS SCHEDULED -- DESPITE THE WORST SNOW CONDITIONS IN THE TYROL FOR YEARS. GAMES ORGANIZERS, FACED WITH DISCOURAGING WEATHER FORECASTS, ARE HURRIEDLY PREPARING ALPINE SLOPES AND TRACKS IN THE HOPE THAT ALL EVENTS WILL BE HELD, EVEN IF NO FRESH SNOW FALLS.

SNOW IS BEING TRANSPORTED FROM NEARBY MOUNTAINS AND LAID ON SKI RUNS BY INNSBRUCK STUDENTS. AND VILLAGERS FROM SURROUNDING WINTER RESORTS HAVE BEEN CALLED IN TO HELP AUSTRIAN SOLDIERS PREPARE TRACKS.

CHIEF WORRY FOR OLYMPIC OFFICIALS IS THE DOWNHILL EVENT ON PATSCHERKOFEL MOUNTAIN, NEAR INNSBRUCK. AT PRESENT, PRACTICE IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE AND DANGEROUS BECAUSE OF SNOW SHORTAGE.

BUT ORGANIZERS ARE MORE HOPEFUL ABOUT OTHER SKI EVENTS. THE SLALOM AND GIANT SLALOM ARE TO BE STAGED IN THE VALLEY SELDOM REACHED BY THE SUN AND THAW. THE OLYMPICS ARE BEING HELD FROM JANUARY 29 TO FEBRUARY 9.
