    AS EXPECTED, EAST EUROPEAN COMPETITORS CARRIED OFF MOST MEDALS IN THE THREE-DAY WORLD CANOEING CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH ENDED TODAY (SUNDAY) IN EAST BERLIN. AT THE END OF YESTERDAY'S EVENTS, RUMANIA WAS LEADING WITH FOUR GOLD MEDALS, HUNGARY WAS SECOND WITH THREE GOLD MEDALS, AND THE SOVIET UNION WAS THIRD WITH ONE GOLD MEDAL.

    THE CHAMPIONSHIP STARTED ON FRIDAY WITH NEARLY 500 OF THE WORLD'S TOP CANOEISTS FROM 25 COUNTRIES COMPETING FOR 16 WORLD TITLES. THE COMPETITION WAS HELD ON EAST BERLIN'S LONG LAKE, IN THE WOODED AREA GRUENAU. THIS YEAR MARKED THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF ORGANISED CANOEING.

    THE FINAL OF THE WOMEN'S 500 METRES SINGLE-SEATER KAYAK EVEN WAS WON BY THE SOVIET UNION'S LUDMILA PINAEVA, WITH ROSWITHA ESSER, OF WEST GERMANY SECOND, AND EAST GERMANY'S ANITA KOBUR THIRD.

    THE 10,000 METRES TWO-MAN CANADIAN CANOE RACE WAS WON BY RUMANIA'S MAXIM AND SIMINOW. SECOND WERE DRIBAS AND KHIMICH OF THE SOVIET UNION, AND THIRD WERE HUNGARY'S PETER AND CSCRHA.

    IN THE 10,000 METRES MEN'S TWO-SEATER KAYAK EVENT, HUNGARY'S TEAM OF SZOLLOSI AND FABIAN WON, FOLLOWED BY SOBY AND JOHANSEN, OF NORWAY,AND KWASIL AND SVEC OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA.
