  • Description

A thousand of Britain's part-time soldiers took part in an exercise in the Solent today aimed at showing how cargo can be discharged from small ships by an Army port task force in emergency wartime conditions. One of the assumptions of the exercise was that the port of Southampton had been blitzed by enemy forces.

A highlight of the exercise - a demonstration of the "dracone" rubber container. It's designed to do the job of tankers in carrying oil at sea; the senior NATO and Commonwealth officers who came along to watch were particularly interested in this novel method of moving oil on the high seas.
