  • Description

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Michael Ramsey, looked upset on Friday (27 November) after a 40-minute talks with the South African Prime Minister John Vorster at his office in Pretoria.

The Archbishop was tight-lipped and grim-faced when he left, and did not comment to reporters on his meeting, as he often does. There was no announcement afterwards what they discussed.

The 66-year-old Primate and Mr. Vorster posed for British Television crews before their discussion.

The meeting took place amid South African suspicion of the Anglican leader because of his declared opposition to resumed arms sales by Britain to South Africa.

Throughout his tour - now nearing the end of its third and final week -- Dr. Ramsey has levelled veiled criticisms of apartheid from the pulpit.

He had expected to present his views on South Africa's race policy in more forthright terms at the meeting with Mr. Vorster.

Earlier, he gave a theological lecture to clergymen of all denominations at Pretoria's Cathedral Hall.
