TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: GANGA: "Only the team of Nigeria as you know has decided to withdraw from the Games of Edmonton. I consider all the African countries are members of Commonwealth are here with me. We hope that the Games will have many success and we think that we'll have a very good stay here in Edmonton for the Commonwealth Games. Nigeria is not the only African country who's not coming. Uganda for example is not coming also (indistinct). The government of Nigeria has made clear why they withdrew. I don't have any comment to make about that. They have made a sovereign decision and I can comment only about the participation of Africa. I don't have the right to comment about the Nigerian position. I a here to make sure that Africa takes part in the games."

Delegations from Zambia, Mauritius, Gambia, Malawi, Lesotho and Kenya arrived on Saturday (29 July). They had been attending the All-African Games in Algeria. Delegations from Tanzania, Swaziland and Ghana arrived on Sunday night (30 July). Tanzanian officials refused to discuss the implications of Nigeria's withdrawal when they arrived.

Background: Athletics....and about 230 athletes from nine African countries arrive in Edmonton on Saturday (29 July) to participate in the 11th Commonwealth Games. Their arrival ended the fears of a repeat of the mass boycott staged during the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The withdrawal of Nigeria from the Games last Wednesday (26 July) in protest against alleged New Zealand sports links with South Africa had lead to the fears of a mass African boycott. The Games Village in Edmonton began filling up with the arrival of the African teams and there was a flurry of activity in the competition venues.

SYNOPSIS: Delegations from six African nations arrived in Edmonton on Saturday on a flight from Algiers. Nine of the 13 African Members of the Commonwealth now seem certain to march in the opening ceremony on Thursday (3 August).

The delegations were welcomed to Edmonton by the Games President Doctor Maury Van Vliet.

The athletes settled down to the tense final days of training while Jean Claude Ganga, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of African Sport held a news conference.
