  • Description

The coalition Government of Bolivia staged a mass demonstration of support in the capital, La Paz, on Monday (21 August) to mark the first anniversary of a military coup d'etat which installed Colonel Hugo Banzer as President.

Workers, troops and party members took part in a four-hour march through La Paz to the Presidential Palace. Many had driven 550 miles (900 kilometres) in trucks from the eastern city of Santa Cruz where the revolution began a year ago.

The coup overthrew the left-wing administration of President Juan Torres and led to a coalition government formed by the National Revolutionary Movement (MNR) and the extreme right-wing Bolivian Socialist Falange (FSB). President Torres, now in exile in Spain, had governed for ten months after overthrowing President Ovando.

The coup in which Colonel Banzer came to power is believed the 181st since Bolivia became independent in 1825.
