  • Description

Celebrating Portugal's fifty years as a republic, Oct 5, Lisbon hoisted the national flag, gun salvoes crashed out from the steps of the town hall, units of the Armed Forces and Republican National Guard marched in parade through the city.

At the Town Hall, the organising committee of the anniversary celebrations - writers, politicians, teachers - repeated the ceremony of Oct 5 1910 proclaiming the republic.

Lisbon Mayor, General Franca Borges, gave the traditional cry: "Long Live the Republic" from the Town Hall balcony, just as his predecessor did fifty years ago.

In the ceremonial room of the presidential palace, adorned by paintings of past presidents, President Americo Thomaz received the committee and in a speech on Portuguese Unity said Portugal was not only commemorating the Republic in Lisbon but in Angola, Mozambique, Goa and Timor; the unity of all Portuguese was an indestructible force, he said.

Portugal's revolution of 1910 lasted a little more than a day and a half. Services were held throughout the country for all those who sacrificed themselves for it then and to the present day.
