  • Description

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE FRENCH COMMUNIST PARTY M.WALDECK-ROCHET, TODAY VOTED AT A POLLING STATION IN NANTERRE.

TONIGHT (SUNDAY) A COMPUTER ESTIMATE BASED ON EARLY RESULTS GAVE THE GAULLISTS BETWEEN 43 AND 47 PER CENT OF THE VOTE - AN INCREASE OF AT LEAST SIX PER CENT ON THE LAST GENERAL ELECTION. THE ESTIMATE WAS GIVEN OUT BY A COMMERCIAL RADIO STATION, EUROPE NUMBER ONE.

THE GENERAL ELECTION, THE SECOND IN TWO YEARS, WAS CALLED BY PRESIDENT DE GAULLE AFTER STRIKES AND VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS HAD ROCKED THE COUNTRY. THERE WAS A MASSIVE TURNOUT IN THE EARLY POLLING TODAY, ALTHOUGH THE VOTING APPEARED TO TAIL OFF LATER IN MANY AREAS. POLITICAL OBSERVERS SAID THE FIRST PARTIAL RESULTS APPEARED TO CONFIRM WIDESPREAD PREDICTIONS OF AN INCREASED GAULLIST VOTE. THERE WAS ALSO MORE SUPPORT THAN HAD BEEN EXPECTED FOR THE CENTRISTS, WITH STRONG AND PREDICTABLE BACKING FOR THE COMMUNISTS.

    M. WALDECK-ROCHET HELD HIS SEAT IN SUBURBAN PARIS. SPORTS MINISTER ROLAND NUNGESSER AND OVERSEAS MINISTER JOEL LE THUELE GOT THROUGH IN THE FIRST ROUND AS DID CIVIL SERVICE MINISTER ROBERT BOULIN AND ANDRE BORD, THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE INTERIOR, ALBIN CHALANDON, THE NEW INDUSTRY MINISTER, WILL HAVE TO FIGHT HIS CONSTITUENCY NEAR PARIS IN THE SECOND ROUND NEXT SUNDAY.
