  • Description

Pele, football star of Brazil's World Cup team, is due to retire from international football. He will play his last match for Brazil against Yugoslavia in Rio De Janeiro on Sunday (July 18), although he has said that he intends to stay with his club, Santos, for another three years.

Internationally recognized as the king of football, the remarkable Pele has been playing since the age of fifteen. He was seventeen when he appeared in his first World Cup. Now aged thirty, he has become the only player in history to score over one thousand goals. Last year, he masterminded the Brazilian team to World Cup victory. His talents have given him world renown, and such is the strength of feeling for him in his native Brazil that it has been reported that even the Brazilian Government are trying to intervene in his decision to leave the national team.

This profile of Pele has been complied from the Visnews Library.

SYNOPSIS: Pele, the idol of youngsters the world over. this monarch of football is as much loved by the rest of the world as he is by his native Brazil Wherever Pele goes, the dreams of boyhood will follow.

The name of Pele has dominated international football since he appeared in his first World Cup match at the age of seventeen. But even with a talent that put him in a class above all others, the Brazilian has suffered his fair share of bad moments on the field. Such as in 1967, when his team, Santos, lost a bad-tempered, brawling game against Inter Milan of Spain by one goal. A much publicised match between two of the world's top teams developed into a riot in New York's Yankee Stadium.

As an athlete, Pele, or, to give hi??? his real name, Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, is near perfect. His magnificent physique has been honed into footballing perfection since he joined his only club, Santos at the age of fifteen. His career with the club has carried with it every accolade in the sport. And he is probably the only player who has ??? a referee suspended by a disciplinary committee after sending him of the field.

South American football is the most colourful form of the sport there is. And when Pele plays, it becomes the ultimate in rich sentiment. A league game against Vasco da Gama i??? Rio de Janeiro in 1969 provided the setting against which the master was hopping to score the one thousandth goal of his career. In honour of the occasion, his team mates carried the Brazilian flag around the pitch before the match. Santos won the game 2-1, and Pele's record thousand came with a penalty. He wept with emotion.

Hero of the World Cup series, he was immortalised in wax in Madame Tussaud's Hall of Fame in London. And one of his most ardent fans is the Brazilian President, Emilio Medici. He personally held a reception in Brazilia to mark Pele's thousandth goal, and had him flown to the party in his own private jet.

In 1968, one hundred goals before, he met Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. On a tour of Brazil, the Queen presented him with a silver cup in the Maracan Stadium, Brazil' football shrine. His personal record of achievement is remarkable. He has now scored more than one thousand goals - ahead of any British player at an average of 77 per year. In 1959, between the World Cups, he scored 125. Small wonder, then, that the man who began life as the son of an unsuccessful footballer should be crowned football's king.

Now, thirty year old Pele has decided to retire from international football, although he will continue to appear for Santos. Instead, he is contemplating a new role as an actor. He is already at work on a film being shot near Sao Paulo. Pele the king plays the part of a slave.
