  • Description

Riders of 13 nations completed in the 350cc event of the Grand Prix of Austria motorcycle race on the autobahn near Salzburg, May 1. The race began with a minute's silence in memory of Britain's Dickie Dale and German Alfred Wohlgemuth who were killed two days earlier in the Nurburgring race.

In the 350cc event at Salzburg, Czech riders Stastny and Havel were the favourites. Stastny, thrown out of the 250cc event by engine trouble, took the lead and stayed in front until the fifth lap, when his engine let him down again. His fellow-countryman Havel crashed soon afterwards but sustained no injuries. With the Czechs out of the race, 25-year-old Hugh Anderson (No.69) of New Zealand, on an AJS, finished the 12 laps in 31 min 44 secs, with an average speed of 72.35 mph, coming in for an easy victory.

Second was Frank Perris of Canada; Third Rudolf Thalhammer of Austria. Fourth place was taken by Australian Champion Ladi Richter.
